“Gracias México por su apoyo”, es parte de lo que contestó para este periódico Ricky Martin al momento de llegar al hotel Hyatt en Phoenix, Arizona, donde se hospedaba.
No lo acosaban ya enloquecidas fans y mostraba un rostro más serio, pero su cara cambió al escuchar la palabra México y alcanzó a decir: “Los amo, siempre quiero volver para allá”. Hacía más de una hora que el cantante puertorriqueño había puesto una “bomba’ de energía en el Dodge Theatre, recinto donde se presentó el lunes pasado, dentro de su gira americana de su nuevo disco titulado “Life”. Y es que por casi dos horas demostró el por qué está en el gusto de millones de personas alrededor del mundo: Baile, carisma, canto y... esa sensualidad que tanto a las latinas como a las “gringas” enloquece. No sólo convocó a miles de mexicanas residentes de Estados Unidos y latinas, entre ellas cientos de sonorenses que se ‘tomaron el día’, sino también a anglosajonas que bailaron y cantaron al ritmo de ‘La copa de la vida’. Ricky sólo hizo lo que sabe hacer muy bien: Entretener. No hubo un solo momento en que el sabor a fiesta decayó. No hubo falla de sonido ni detalle que demeritara su trabajo, aunque hubo muchas que se quejaron porque no tuvo contacto físico con sus ya poseídas seguidoras.
Las ‘gringas’ no saben bailar… A Lindsay Hamilton poco le importó que estuviera a destiempo de esos ritmos latinos, solo movía su cadera y gritaba: “Te amou”; a su lado, dos guapas latinas daban la impresión de haber salido de un carnaval, pero esta chica estadounidense seguía su curso. “No importa si no se bailar así, siento la música y me gusta Ricky”, decía, “pero lo más importante es que estoy aquí y tengo un pase VIP para conocerlo”. Tiene ‘manager’ sonorense La sorpresa de esa noche fue el enterarse que el representante de Ricky Martin, el manager, es originario de Nogales, Sonora. Aunque fue imposible hablar con él por su importante responsabilidad detrás del escenario, Paco Maldonado es desde hace más de cinco años el encargado de representar a uno de los artistas latinos más importantes del mundo. Su propio hermano, René Maldonado, que aguardaba afuera del recinto, dijo orgulloso que es la persona más cercana al cantante en lo profesional y que llegó hasta donde está por su gran preparación profesional y calidad como persona que tiene Paco. LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Ricky Martin's sexual fascinations may be dominating the media as of late, but it was a shower of solid-gold singles that marked his sold-out performance Tuesday night at Hollywood's Pantages Theater.
Unfortunately, the hit parade was hosted by two markedly different frontmen. The first was tentative and hesitant, as if he wasn't sure whether the stage was the place he wanted to be. The second was charismatic and dynamic, working as if he owned the stage and everyone in front of it. While the crowd shrieked and squealed every bit of the way, it wasn't until the midway point in the set that Martin truly began to earn the adoration.
"Til I Get to You," "I Don't Care" and "This Is Good" opened the show with the same Middle Eastern flavor that seasons Martin's latest release, "Life." Although they scored points for artistic flair, they did little to cast the frontman in the spotlight he deserved. His delivery lacked the panache that later would ignite such more explosive numbers as "Loaded," "La Bomba" and "Por Arriba, Por Abajo."
Even the megahits "Livin' La Vida Loca" and "She Bangs" fell flat, restructured so dramatically that it seemed as if Martin was ashamed of his crossover sensations. Nearly halfway through the two hour, 21-song set, the sluggish pace and sputtering energy rivaled only that of the "General Hospital" episodes in which the former Menudo standout starred a decade ago.
Then everything changed with "Maria." The first song of the set to embrace the singer's Spanish roots, the "uno, dos, tres . . ." chorus echoed through the theater with all the energy of an '80s rock anthem. Martin finished the song with a dramatic kick, throwing his fists into the air, unleashing an inspired "Yeah!" and showing his first genuine smile of the night.
Ricky Martin had arrived.
"Fuego Contra Fuego" slowed the pace, but the ballad proved one of the frontman's shining moments, paving the way for the syrupy midtempo pop of "Nobody Wants to Be Lonely" (sans Christina Aguilera, who performed on the album version). Martin isn't the most gifted singer or dancer, but he's a master showman, capitalizing on his shortcomings by doing just enough to get by and letting his suave charm and extraordinary charisma carry him the rest of the way. Perhaps that's why he seems most comfortable and spontaneous when performing his early hits, as if he's somewhat disillusioned by the expectations of mainstream American success. Judging from his set this night, he's more than content to let his heritage shine.
By the time he returned to the stage in an unbuttoned, sequined shirt for "It's Alright," it was impossible not to get caught up in the performance. A Latin American marriage of rock punch and pop polish, "The Cup of Life," "Vuelve" and "Drop It on Me" closed the set with Martin in prime form, making up for the night's earlier misgivings and earning every bit of the standing ovation as he left the stage.

Martin inició su presentación con ‘Til I Get to You, una canción en inglés que se distingue de sus temas con sabor más latino. La elección no parecía casual: su nuevo disco Life está dirigido esencialmente para el mercado estadounidense, y los shows de esta gira han intentado promocionar básicamente las composiciones en inglés.
Otro de los temas nuevos, I Don’t Care, mostró una inclinación hacia el hip-hop, que se reforzó con la presencia de un coro fememino con tendencia R&B.
El auditorio estaba también provisto de unas pantallas gigantes que, en la introducción de Livin’ la Vida Loca, sirvieron para proyectar imágenes de una película japonesa de animación, algo que si bien resultó atractivo, se ha visto ya en las actuaciones de Madonna.
Conformado por 10 músicos, el grupo del astro puertorriqueño se movió con comodidad entre los distintos estilos que practica su líder, aunque ninguno de sus integrantes tuvo la oportunidad de destacarse por cuenta propia.
Además de los temas nuevos en inglés, el repertorio de anoche también debía incluir temas conocidos como She Bangs, María, Fuego contra fuego, La bomba y un popurrí de algunas de sus primeras canciones.
En vista de su prolongado retiro de las actuaciones abiertas y masivas (en 2003 brindó por ejemplo un breve show privado en el local que todavía se llamaba Anfiteatro Universal), la presencia de Martin anoche en el Pantages generó muchas expectativas.
Si bien su nuevo álbum —realizado casi completamente en inglés— no ha alcanzado aún el éxito de ventas esperado, el cantante y actor se las ha arreglado de algún modo para mantenerse vigente ante la mirada pública (aunque haya sido en días recientes por la polémica entrevista que publicó la revista Blender, en la que dio detalles elocuentes sobre sus costumbres sexuales).
Tras apartarse de los escenarios durante cuatro años, la súperestrella latina de 34 años empezó en noviembre pasado la gira correspondiente a su nuevo álbum, Life, que tuvo sus primeras fechas en Latinoamérica, incluyendo presentaciones en México, Panamá, El Salvador, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Brasil, Argentina, Chile y Uruguay —incluyendo lugares en los que no había actuado en más de 10 años— y cerró a mediados de diciembre en su natal Puerto Rico
La gira, que lleva como nombre One Night Only (aunque se la conoce en español como Una noche con Ricky Martin), se trasladó el 15 de enero a Estados Unidos, iniciándose con un show de entradas completamente agotadas en El Paso, Texas.
La segunda etapa de los conciertos, que llegó anoche a Los Ángeles continuará inmediatamente después en San Diego, Las Vegas, Reno, Oakland, Chicago, Nueva York, Boston, Washington, Atlantic City, Miami y Orlando, para terminar el 19 de febrero en un segundo concierto en San Juan, Puerto Rico, la tierra que vio nacer al artista.
